In The Name of God

"Our children are the hope of the world."

Tebyan Bilingual School provides a secure and invigorating learning atmosphere in which students acquire and build up the knowledge and life skills and flair that they need for a successful future. In addition, we develop their language skills in Farsi and English, to help them in their path to becoming successful future world - nation.

**Why Choose a Bilingual School?

There are lots of benefits of choosing a bilingual school, although the choice requires careful consideration. There is an argument which says children are much better able to learn a language if they are immersed in it over an extended period of time, rather than being taught the language simply through once or twice weekly language classes. It is also possible to provide many and varied learning experiences which can teach children about the culture, traditions and way of life related to the language of the school. Ultimately children can complete their time at a bilingual school with a high degree of language competence and fluency in both English and a second language. One of the principle advantages of education undertaken in bilingual schools is that the child is exposed to new cultures and new languages at a young age, as well as gaining a well rounded and thorough academic education. Bilingual schools can differ in terms of both the educational programs and the dominance of particular languages. The curriculum of most bilingual schools is designed for those who speak English as a second language, The graduates of bilingual schools are typically more mature, broad minded and confident than other children of their age. This is a consequence of having been exposed to new cultures so young and the confidence they gain from being able to express themselves in more than one language.
Whilst all staff in bilingual schools should be experienced in dealing with the circumstances of students being different from the norm, it is important to choose a school which can offer as much student-relevant support as required, with the basic educational factors, language learning and adaptation to new cultures. This choice can only be made after thorough research and consideration.

Some schools in Iran developed strong reputations for teaching languages to their students. They have developed methods of teaching their students based on an immersion method. This approach is where part (often around half) of the curriculum is taught in one language, and the other half in English. Teachers are often designated as being an 'English' teacher or an 'other language' teacher. So for example, at a school where Persian is taught, some teachers would only speak to the children in Persian some would only speak in English.

Often subject areas are taught in a designated language, so Physical Education and Health might be taught in Persian While Art, Science and Math might be taught in English and Persian. These schools require highly specialized and skilled teachers, who are able to offer both subject matter expertises in their teaching areas, as well as a high level of language teaching skill in their chosen language. One of These Bilingual Schools in Shiraz, the Cultural Capital of Iran, is Tebyan Bilingual School.

**Why Choosing Tebyan Bilingual School?

Our Learning and Teaching Philosophy:

Bilingual Education is an enriched model of education where two languages and two cultures meet to create a unique quality school experience. Children who have been educated through such a model will be able to function in two languages and in two or more cultures, and therefore be better prepared to meet the demands, the new millennium places upon them.

Our aims and objectives are:

  1. Bilingual Education strives not only for bilingual proficiency but also for high academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding.
  2. Bilingual Education strives for Additive Bilingualism.
  3. Bilingual Education is developmental and child-centered.
  4. Bilingual Education is inclusive and languages are taught through curriculum subjects and not in isolation by segregating pupils in E/ISL withdrawal classes.
  5. In Bilingual Education parents and teachers work as partners and share common objectives.
  6. Bilingual Education fulfils the requirements of both national and international curricula and provides its learners with life-long knowledge and skills.
  7. In Bilingual programs the instruction in two languages is carried out by qualified and committed teachers who, plan their lessons together but, in teaching, keep the two languages distinct by adopting the “one person one language” approach.

Our model of education is based on and supported by world wide research findings:

More than 150 studies conducted during the past 50 years consistently confirm the following advantages of Bilingual Education; (J. Cummins 1997, 2000, C. Baker 1996, 1998, F. Genesee 1997, 2000)

  • More creative and flexible thinking
  • Greater problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Increased curricular achievement
  • Superior academic and linguistic performance when compared to monolingual counterparts
  • Ease in learning a third or fourth language
  • Twice the enjoyment of reading and writing
  • Advanced interpreting and translation skills
  • Access to two or more cultures and worlds of experience
  • Increased intercultural understanding, tolerance and respect for differences
  • Raised self-esteem and confidence in social interactions
  • Greater interpersonal skills
  • Increased flexibility and adaptability to new situations and contexts
  • Enhanced economic and employment benefits
  • Easier population mobility from one country to another

In addition, there are great advantages in learning a second language from very young; in pre-school stage language is learned through play and enjoyment just as the first language is learned in a natural way; there are no pressures on performance and children’s innate curiosity and strong desire to communicate facilitate further the language development process. All instruction and school activities are conducted in a dual-language immersion environment, with equal weight given to learning in English and Farsi. At Tebyan Bilingual School, all children are taught their subjects in both English and Farsi, and each classroom has two teachers, one for each language.

The Tebyan Bilingual Elementary is organized on a Dual Language Bilingual Immersion model.
Subjects are taught in both languages. We offer a stimulating and rigorous program of studies where children develop their skills and knowledge in the different areas of the curriculum taught through the medium of both English and Persian. Our bilingual program of studies is enriched by specialist Computer, music, art and physical education teachers

We aim to develop the whole individual integrating academic and life skills to enable our students to excel in a increasingly competitive world and to be effective members and leaders in their communities. Our approach for character development recognizes that values, life skills and subject related skills need to be used concurrently, in order to become part of the internal make up of students to the point that they can apply them in different situations and scenarios in life.
Values that we aim to develop are respect, honesty, empathy, fairness, caring, responsibility for self and others, citizenship, cultural identity, openness to other cultures and rationalization. Life skills include critical thinking and decision making, interpersonal communication, managing self and healthy relationship, maintaining a healthy life style and cooperation and team work. Subjects that deal with character and life skill development are English Language Arts, Health and Life Planning, Social Studies, Islamic Studies and Qur'an and National Studies. Other subjects integrate such objectives with varying degrees. Our teaching methods are instrumental for character development and the overall school environment provides the required role model.

Formative assessment –assessment that takes place during the school year– enables us to monitor student learning and address the specific areas where students may need extra support. Standardized summative assessment takes place at the end of the school year and compares student level of achievement to international standards. This process of benchmarking will enable us to measure the achievement of TBS objectives and plan the development of our school for the benefit of your children.

For those who want the best of learning resources:
your child will be taught using the best materials, textbooks and learning resources, from leading education publishers, in their classroom and in the school library.

We also have the services of our resource teacher who works with students that need the extra support and have been identified by their English teachers."

**Teaching methods

English Language

Speaking: Speaking is taught base on Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) which describes speaking performance at each of its six levels.

Listening: Listening is an active process, as the mind actively engages in making meaning. It is therefore our teachers' duty to ensure that the materials they use are comprehensible to our young learners, as well as within the range of what they are developmentally ready for. In order to maximize the potential for acquisition of language, we need to ensure that our young learners are not stressed about this process.

Reading: Reading programs (including phonics in the elementary program) challenge students to read and respond thoughtfully to works of classic and contemporary literature that are recognized for quality and literary merit.

Writing: Requirements in writing focus on grammar, spelling, punctuation, and visual presentation.

**Elementary Department

Our elementary division provides a structured, yet nurturing and supportive environment where children flourish. While a challenging, stimulating, academic curriculum is crucial to the success of our children; careful attention is also given to their social and emotional development.

By providing a caring and supportive classroom environment, the students are encouraged to develop independence, a respect for others and a sense of responsibility for themselves. By working both independently and in cooperative groups, our boys and girls develop life-long learning skills.

The curriculum emphasizes traditional disciplines, including English language arts (e.g. English usage, writing, etc.), Farsi, Islamic studies, math, social studies, science, art, music, computers, and physical education. Character education is integrated into the general curriculum.

Children, through a variety of teaching strategies, learn to explore their world and develop a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. Students are encouraged to utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It is our goal to maximize each child's potential and to prepare them for their role in an ever-changing global community.

As the students progress from the lower elementary grades to the intermediate grades (3-5), they continue to meet the challenges of a stimulating and expansive curriculum. They are provided with an understanding of the world in which they live and with the tools for future success. The concepts introduced in the primary grades are further developed and new concepts and skills are introduced. New ideas are explored and creative solutions to problems are encouraged. Children learn appropriate work habits and become independent and responsible students.
